After the layout and the plywood, the finish is what you see and touch every day. Here is how the four most popular options compare.
Laminate
Laminate is a decorative sheet pressed onto the board. It offers the widest range of colours, wood grains and textures, is durable, and is the most budget-friendly. Matte and textured laminates hide fingerprints well. It is a safe choice for most families.
Acrylic
Acrylic shutters have a mirror-like, high-gloss surface and deep colour. They look premium and reflect light, which helps small kitchens feel brighter. Gloss shows fingerprints and fine scratches more easily, so they need regular wiping.
PU (polyurethane)
PU finish is sprayed in layers and can be matte or glossy in almost any colour. It gives a seamless, high-end look and allows curves and detailing. It costs more and needs skilled application, so choose an experienced maker.
Veneer
Veneer is a thin slice of real wood. It gives natural grain and warmth that laminates only imitate, and works beautifully in wardrobes, panelling and doors. It needs polish or sealing and some care in humid areas.
Quick comparison
- Budget: laminate is lowest; PU and veneer are highest.
- Gloss look: acrylic.
- Natural wood feel: veneer.
- Colour freedom: PU.
- Low maintenance: matte laminate.
You can combine finishes, for example laminate on base cabinets and acrylic or glass on wall units. See our finishes on the homepage, check how each one changes your estimate in the Kitchen Cost Calculator, or read about modular kitchen cost in Bhopal.
