L-Shaped, U-Shaped, Parallel or Straight: Choosing Your Kitchen Layout

16 October 2026 ยท 2 min read

The layout is the first decision in any modular kitchen because everything else, from storage to workflow, depends on it. Here is how the four common layouts compare.

Straight kitchen

All cabinets and the countertop run along one wall. It suits compact flats and narrow kitchens, and it is the most economical layout. The limitation is walking distance between the sink, hob and refrigerator if the wall is long.

L-shaped kitchen

Two adjoining walls form an L. This is the most popular layout in Indian homes because it makes good use of the corner and keeps the sink, hob and refrigerator close together in a natural work triangle. A corner carousel or magic-corner unit removes dead space.

Parallel kitchen

Two facing counters with a walkway between them. It gives a very efficient workflow and plenty of storage, and works well in long, narrow rooms. Keep at least 1 metre between the counters so two people can move comfortably.

U-shaped kitchen

Three walls of cabinets give the maximum storage and counter space. It is best for larger kitchens and for families that cook often. In a small room it can feel closed in, so choose lighter shutter colours.

How to decide

  • Measure your room and mark doors, windows and plumbing points.
  • Decide where the sink, hob and refrigerator will go; keep them within easy reach of each other.
  • Count how many people cook at the same time.
  • Think about a breakfast counter if the room is large enough.
