Plywood is the hidden skeleton of your kitchen and wardrobes, and the grade you choose decides how long the furniture lasts. The three grades you will hear about most are MR, BWR and BWP.
MR plywood (moisture resistant)
MR plywood is bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. It tolerates normal humidity but not standing water or repeated wetting. It is a sensible choice for bedroom wardrobes, TV units and dry storage.
BWR plywood (boiling water resistant)
BWR uses a stronger phenolic resin and resists moisture much better than MR. It is a good middle option for kitchen shelves and loft cabinets away from direct water.
BWP plywood (boiling waterproof)
BWP, often called marine-grade, uses phenolic resin and is made to withstand prolonged contact with water and heat. It is the safest choice for sink units, areas near the hob, bathroom-adjacent cupboards and outdoor-facing joinery.
Where to use what
- Sink and hob cabinets: BWP
- Other kitchen base and wall cabinets: BWR or BWP
- Bedroom wardrobes and drawers: MR or BWR
- Doors and balcony joinery: BWP
Tips when buying
- Ask for the brand, thickness and the grade printed on the sheet, not just a verbal promise.
- Check the edges for gaps, and the surface for patches and soft spots.
- Match the grade to the location rather than using the most expensive grade everywhere; this keeps the budget sensible without sacrificing durability where it matters.
